On Friday, the men’s varsity hockey team gets ready to play.

The “Raider Review” is a weekly series that The Shakerite will publish every Monday night, covering the previous week in sports. This week’s edition covers sports events that fell between Nov. 26-Dec. 2. Next week will feature games from Dec. 3-9.

Men’s Basketball

On Saturday, in Akron, the men’s varsity basketball team won their season opener against John R. Buchtel High School 85-62. They were led by point guard Danny Young Jr., who had 27 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Shammah Scott scored 24 points, which also helped the team win. On Sunday night, at Cleveland Heights, the Raiders lost 73-51. Cleveland Heights exploded in the third quarter to confirm a win. They were led by the number one ranked player in Ohio, Jaelyn Withers. The Raiders’ record is 1-1, and they will travel to Brunswick Friday night.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s varsity basketball team suffered a 67 point loss to Solon High School last Wednesday. Although, Solon came into the game as the state runner up from last season. The final score was 91-24. On Saturday, the women’s varsity basketball team lost 68-31 against Christian Cornerstone Academy. The Raiders were led by Senior Kayla Young who led the team in points. The team now has a record of 0-2.

The junior varsity women’s basketball team won on Wednesday night 27-18 at Solon, but lost in a hard fought game 32-28at Christian Cornerstone. The JV team also plays Monday night against Warrensville Heights before varsity.

Hockey

The varsity hockey team tied with Rocky River Wednesday night, 2-2. The two goals were scored by Evan Grossman-Mckee and Evan Richards. The Raiders led most of the game, but during the last two minutes of the 3rd period they received two costly penalties. Rocky River took advantage of this, and scored two goals in 20 seconds to tie the game. On Friday night, the Raiders played Lake Catholic at home. They won 2-1 with goals from Britt Anderson and Evan Grossman-Mckee. On Saturday, the varsity hockey team won 5-1 against Walsh Jesuit. Goals were scored by Keenan O’Toole, James Hubbard, Evan Grossman-Mckee, Josh Floyd and Peter Levin. The Raiders’ next game is Friday, December 7, against University School. The varsity hockey team now has a 4-2-3 record.

The junior varsity team had their first official home game last Friday night against University School. The Raiders had a large amount of student fans for a junior varsity game late at night. In the end, the team played well and managed to tie the game 3-3. On Sunday night, the Raiders played the Mentor Cardinals. After a well fought game, the hockey team lost 4-5. Wrestling

The Raider wrestling team placed third at the Briggs Invitational on Saturday. The team was led by juniors Eli Meinhard and Najee Lockett. Lockett, who wrestled at St. Ignatius High School freshman and sophomore year, helped the team with no losses, 5-0, at the Invitational. Eli Meinhard, the younger brother of former state qualifier Sam Meinhard, went 4-1 at the Invitational. The next meet is Saturday Dec. 7 at the Cleveland Catholic Conference.
