Raiders Winning on New Turf

Fall sports teams’ record on the new turf field is currently 3-1-1, while the cumulative fall sports record is 28-17-4.

The field hockey team tied Bexley 1-1 at their Friday evening home game and beat Stow 5-1 at home on Thursday, making their record 4-0-1. In the first home football game Sept. 1, the Raiders crushed John F. Kennedy 35-0, taking their record to 1-1.

The turf field will be the home to four fall sports teams: men’s soccer (2-2-1), women’s soccer (1-2-2), football and field hockey. Sophomore field hockey player Olivia Hamilton notices a difference on turf.  “It’s a lot easier to pass the ball because it’s not bumpy,” she said.  Both football player junior Nolan Jackson and Hamilton say they prefer turf to grass.

“In the long run, it will change the attendance [at the games],” Athletic Director Don Readance said about the new turf field. Although people have to pay admission now, there will be passes for sale with discounted prices for the games.

Fall sports teams not using the turf field are the men’s and women’s golf teams (11-0 and 0-9), the women’s tennis team (7-2), the women’s volleyball team (2-1), and men’s and women’s cross country teams, which placed third and second, respectively, in their first meet of the season.
