Shaker Heights voters re-elected Mayor David Weiss over challenger Scott Shelfer. Weiss received 78 percent of the vote.
Weiss, 62, took office in 2018 after winning a special election, serving a one-year unexpired term. In 2019, he was re-elected for a full four-year term. With his win Nov. 7, he will begin his third term as mayor of Shaker Heights.
Weiss got his start at the Cleveland law firm McDonald, Hopkins, Burke & Haber Co. LPA, where he eventually became a partner. As a Shaker Heights resident and active member of the community, Weiss served as an elected Shaker Heights City Council member, as well as a member of committees such as the Shaker Heights City Planning Commission.
When he took office as mayor, he headed the development of the Van Aken District and various housing and apartment developments. Weiss touted these city improvements as part of his campaign for re-election.
Shelfer, 52, migrated to Cleveland from Miami with his wife and children 12 years ago. He brought his land surveying company, Exacta, which he has since sold. He is currently a member of Exacta’s board, as well as a core investor and chairman of both Generational Fittings and Mika Metal Fabricating.
A Shaker resident since 2011, Shelfer quickly became involved with the community. He has served as a board member of the Shaker Schools Foundation and the Shaker Heights Country Club. Shelfer also coached lacrosse at Shaker Heights Middle School.
