Raider Review, Dec. 10-16

The “Raider Review” is a weekly series that The Shakerite will publish every Monday night, covering the previous week in sports. This week’s edition covers sports events that fell between Dec. 10-16. 

Men’s Basketball

 

The men’s varsity basketball team suffered a close loss to Mentor on Friday night, 80-79. In a thrilling back and forth game, Shaker fouled Mentor on an attempted three point shot with two seconds left in the 4th quarter, giving Mentor three free throws, in which they made one. Shaker down by one point, they had one more opportunity to score, but did not after junior Dakota Cochran missed a half court shot at the buzzer. Junior Shammah Scott and Cochran both combined to score 47 points. Freshman Danny Young Jr. also poured in 14, including the game tying layup at 79 with 10 seconds left. Mentor hosts Solon on Friday night, while Shaker will host Garfield Heights in a highly anticipated game on Wednesday night.

The men’s junior varsity basketball team won against Mentor 69-57. Sophomore Jahdae Walker led the team with 36 points. He hit a lot of big shots and free throws in the 4th quarter to keep the lead for his team. The freshman team also won 68-61. Both teams play Wednesday against Garfield Heights.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s varsity basketball team lost twice this past week, losing to Mentor 58-27, and Medina 56-21. Mentor was led by guards Brooke Hickman and Kaitlyn Unetich, who combined for 24 points. The leading scorer for the Raiders during the game was sophomore Tahsja Jackson with nine points. Undefeated Medina also had their way against the Raiders as they  went on a 20-0 scoring run in the third quarter to seal the game away. Senior guard Kayla Young led the Raiders in scoring during the game. The Raiders will try to win their first game of the season at Shaw this week.

The women’s JV basketball team also lost big at Mentor on Wednesday. At halftime they were down 47-8. Also on Saturday the team lost to Medina 50-12. The team will try to get back in the win column against Shaw this week.

Hockey

The varsity hockey team won once, lost once and tied twice over the weekend in the Padua Holiday Tournament. On Friday against Findlay, senior James Hubbard scored to lead the raiders to a 2-1 victory. On Saturday, the Raiders had two games Saturday where they both tied against Toledo St. John’s, 2-2, and St. Charles, 3-3. Seniors Keenan O’Toole and Britt Anderson led the team throughout both games. On Sunday morning, the team played Findlay for their final game of the tournament, but lost 6-2. The Raiders, now 7-3-6, will host Hudson at Thornton Park on Thursday night.  

On Saturday, at Thornton park, the JV hockey team shutout Holy Name 4-0. Junior Elliott Green had two goals and sophomore Max Benincasa also scored two goals. Senior goalie Gus Nace played the whole game and did not allow one shot in. The team will host the Thorton Park Tournament throughout the week starting on Tuesday.

Swimming

The swimming team traveled to Spire Institute this past Saturday to compete at the High School Winter Championships. The meet lasted all day with preliminaries at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Senior and Ohio State commit Chachi Gustafson won both the 100 and 200 yard freestyle. Junior Maggie Perry also placed 8th in the 50 yard freestyle. The team will host St. Ignatius and Magnificat this weekend for their next meet.

Wrestling  

On Thursday and Friday, at the GCC Double Dual meet versus Brunswick and Mentor, the wrestling team came in third place out of three teams. Juniors Brendan Hansen and Eli Meinhard both had several pins. Undefeated junior Najee Lockett did not wrestle at the meet. He and the rest of the team will travel to Lakewood on Saturday for the Matteucci Classic.
