The organization Adopt-a-Family gave student council a wish list for the family council is sponsoring. If you would like to donate anything listed, contact student council advisory Amanda Ahrens, [email protected], or drop a gift off at the high school.

For most students at Shaker Heights High School, the thought of a holiday season without receiving presents seems inconceivable. Meanwhile, 11.6 percent of Cuyahoga County lives in poverty, a fact that will undoubtedly make the season of giving challenging for some. Student Council’s annual December fundraiser, Adopt-a-Family, aims to make the holiday for one local Cleveland family an incredible one. This year, Student Council has adopted a local family with three young children, ages 6 and 2 years old, and an 11 month old. The family gave us a wish list with gift ideas for the three children and mother.

To raise money for our family, Student Council will be sponsoring a candy cane sale! Candy canes will be sold for $1 during all lunch periods starting Thursday the 12th through Tuesday the 17th and delivered during 2nd period on Friday, Dec. 20th. I think the candy cane sale is a fun way for people to not only donate to Adopt-a-Family, but to also give a small gift to their friends. I mean, who doesn’t want to be Glen Coco, receiving four candy canes in the middle of class? To find out more about Cleveland’s Adopt-a-family organization, go to: http://www.adoptafamilynow.org.

In other Student Council happenings, we recently raised $650 for the Red Cross’ Philippines typhoon relief fund through our annual Rake-a-Thon, an event where council members offer to rake Shaker lawns for an optional donation. I was shocked to see the lack of news coverage about the devastating typhoon that hit the Philippines in early November. This lack of media coverage prompted Council to go door to door throughout the Shaker neighborhoods offering to rake lawns for a donation to the cause. While council’s fundraiser for the Red Cross has ended, anybody can still donate to the Philippines typhoon relief fund by visiting the Red Cross’ website and making a donation there. Two big annual spirit days are coming up soon! Prep Day in support of the hockey team’s game against University School will be Friday, Dec. 13th. The following Friday, Dec. 20th, will be Ugly Sweater Day. For more updates on Student Council events and fundraisers, look out for posters in the hallway, listen to announcements, or talk to a Student Council member.
