The Shakerite earned an eighth-place Best of Show ranking for newspaper tabloids Nov. 17 at the National Scholastic Press Association convention in San Antonio, Texas.
The Best of Show competition featured 430 entries this year. The Shakerite previously earned Best of Show status in 2005 at the Chicago NSPA convention. The 2005-2006 Shakerite went on to earn its second NSPA Pacemaker award.
The issue that earned Best of Show recognition was published in May 2012 and featured an investigation of sexual abuse incidents among students at the high school. Also included in the paper was an investigation of illegal candy sales in the high school, a profile of rising Shaker alumnus rapper Lil’ Marv and an article that looked into the costs of concussions for athletes involved in impact sports. The issue was the first in which Shakerite editors compiled the One Page Shakerite, which appears on the paper’s back page.
Seniors Sarah-Jane Lorenzo and Kyra Hall are the print edition chief and managing editors, respectively. The Shakerite is advised by Natalie Sekicky. Former Shakerite editor and current third-year law student Emily Grannis (’06) is a volunteer adviser who works with Shakerite investigations.
