The Shaker Heights High School Writing Center celebrated its grand opening Sept. 25 with a sticky note memoir title contest won by junior Eren Kahriman.

Students were invited to write the title of their personal memoir on a sticky note and to affix it to a whiteboard in the writing center in Room 228. Entries were judged by the 16 senior interns who created the contest and work in the Writing Center.

“Human #107,000,000,001: Why I’m ‘Special’: A Cynical Look on Life” was Kahriman’s winning title. Senior Writing Center intern Margaret Bartimole said many of the contest entries were funny. “I thought it was great,” said Bartimole. “I thought some of them were really funny. We got a lot of really, really funny submissions.”

“How to be Stressed and Cute at the Same Time” was the second-place winner and the third place winner submitted “That 25$ Chipotle Gift Card and How it Changed my Life Forever.” The prize for first place was a $15 gift card and second and third places received a $5.

The Writing Center is advised and directed by English teacher Cathy Lawlor, the founder, and English teacher Aimee Grey. It is open periods 4/5, 6/7, and 9 and after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Students can go to the Writing Center for help with school writing projects and college essays.

“I would say it was a success,” Bartimole said of the opening. “I mean, I wasn’t here last year because you’re only a writing intern your senior year, and I didn’t actually know that much about the Writing Center, but it’s really awesome how it’s picked up steam.”
