The Senior Lounge Committee is staging a Talent Show Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at the high school.
One of the first actions taken to update the senior lounge, the event is being organized by the committee, led by senior cheerleaders Nia Martin and Kamille Lanier. The administration and high school PTO presidents Meghan Breitzmann and Lisa Hopkins are supporting the effort. The committee wants to add new seating; new games like foosball, air hockey and pool; new lighting and a new TV.
The committee previously hosted a bake sale table at the Oct. 11 Raider 5K Run. “We have raised about $200 already,” Martin said. Talent show tickets are $5, and all proceeds will support renovations.
“It will be one night only. We are hoping for a good crowd!” Breitzmann said.

The talent show is a new way to showcase students. “This will be Shaker’s first–ever talent show, and we hope that this can become a tradition for years to come, simply because it’s fun, not necessarily as a fundraiser,” Martin said.
Eleven students have signed up to perform so far. Martin and Lanier plan to host another round of virtual try-outs due to a mix-up. “We had a misprint with the dates on our flyers, so we’re sending out a Google form with the option to audition at home and just submit a video,” Martin said. The deadline for virtual try-outs is Nov. 4. Martin and Lanier said they plan to get the staff involved, too.
So far, the show includes a range of talents. “There are some students who are singing, as well as students playing a variety of instruments, from the guitar to the piano to drums,” Breitzmann said.
The Senior Lounge Committee is planning future fundraisers and hopes to get support from businesses including Sgt. Clean Carwash and Kripsy Kreme. They also want to host a teacher vs. student volleyball game.
Said Martin, “We have a lot of fundraising ideas that we can’t wait to put on, if approved.”
