Hutchings seeks students for advisory committee

The Shaker Schools administration building, located on Parkland Drive.

The superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee needs new voices, and students are invited to apply.

Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr., now in his fourth year as superintendent, will again convene a diverse group of high school students for his Student Advisory Committee. Sophomores and juniors are eligible for the two-year commitment. Applications are available in the main office or online at shaker.org.

When applying, students will be asked why they want to be a part of the committee, what they are passionate about and how their passions can affect the committee’s mission. The application also requires information about other extracurricular commitments and expectations students have of the committee.

Applications are due Oct. 3. Selected applicants will be interviewed after school Oct. 19 between 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the administration building. Committee members must be willing to meet at least four times a year from 3:30-5 p.m. Meeting dates are Nov. 10, Jan. 19, March 23 and May 4.

The committee comprises three subcommittees: student experience, communication and curriculum. Each subcommittee works on projects to improve the school community.

Junior Trisha Roy, who joined the committee as a sophomore, said it’s a rewarding experience. She said, “It’s so great to be able to talk about problems the student population faces and actively work towards creating solutions.”
