To put it simply, I enjoy playing Candy Crush.
The feeling you get when you perform a good combination, the amount of points you receive when you cross a striped candy with an explosive candy. What’s not to love? Sure, I might enjoy Candy Crush to the point where people call me “obsessed” or “addicted,” but people always tell you to do what you are passionate about, and this is it for me.
Candy Crush is like buying an addictive drug. You see other people doing it, and you think to yourself, “Maybe I’ll try that!” The next thing you know, you get it for yourself and you want more and more, and it gets expensive. Want to start your Candy Crush game with a striped or explosive candy to clear more of your screen at once? That’ll be $1.99. Five extra moves at the end of your game? That’s another dollar. Although my addiction hasn’t gotten to the point where I spend money on power-ups in this game, there are approximately 56 million daily active users for this game, and the game brings in $633,000 per day, or $231,045,000 per year, which is enough to support a bad drug addiction.
King, the developer of Candy Crush, has found that 90 percent of the Candy Crush players are over 21, and the split is roughly 50/50 between men and women. The company attributes its popularity to many things, the first being the easy accessibility. Because it is available for computer, iPhone, and Android, you can play it wherever you go. King’s “Game Guru,” Tommy Palm, partially attributes the success of the game to its bright colors and reliability. Everyone likes candy, so what’s not to like about a game in which you swipe brightly colored candy across a screen?
Avery Oberfeld, an avid Candy Crush player, is currently on level 185. “I’ve been playing Candy Crush for over a year now, and I still haven’t gotten bored of it,” she said.
Yes, Candy Crush is a waste of time and yes, I do have better things to do with my time than swiping images of neon-colored food across a small screen, but sometimes you just need a break from school and life, and Candy Crush offers that.
