Shaker Grad Munger Out For the Year at Ohio State

Ohio State freshman and Shaker alumus Donovan Munger will miss the Buckeyes’ 2013 season due to complications from a blood clot in his lung. Munger was a four-star recruit last year for Ohio State and was considered a top 25 defensive tackle out of the class of 2013.

“Donovan was one of the best football players I’ve ever coached,” Shaker head football coach Jarvis Gibson said. “Not by position, but as a football player.”

Munger had not been practicing prior to the discovery of the blood clot because he was held up by the NCAA Clearinghouse, the department that goes over the transcripts of NCAA recruits. He was eventually approved academically and was set to practice and play in the preseason; however, this serious injury will have him sidelined for the year.

Gibson thinks Munger shouldn’t have an issue recovering from this injury. “[Munger] is hard working and very dedicated. . .He definitely has the toughness to overcome this obstacle.”

This injury will put the both Shaker alumni on the shelf for Urban Meyer at Ohio State. Antonio Underwood, Shaker class of 2011, will also miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL that will require surgery. Underwood was competing for a starting job and was establishing himself as one of the elite eight guys on the line for OSU, according to Cleveland.com.

The connection between Shaker and Ohio State football may be transparent in 2013; however, look for both Underwood and Munger to make noise for starting roles come next fall.
