Forecast: Milder Winter, Fewer Days Off

Weather blogs predict a less snowy, slightly warmer winter, and students predict fewer calamity  days this winter because of changes to the school calendar.

In the past two school years, Shaker has closed school 10 times — five each year — due to severe winter weather, especially extremely low temperatures and wind chills.

The start of this winter, according to Live Weather Blogs, is going to be warm and dry. However, starting the second half of the winter, meteorologists predict Cleveland will experience a few ice or snow storms and normal freezing temperatures.

Students are forecasting similar events. “I think that it will be very cold this year with a lot of snow, but definitely not as cold as last year,” sophomore Sloane Kiely said.

Closures in the last two years were unprecedented in Shaker, which has long held a reputation for keeping schools open when nearly all others are closed. With the shortening school year, however, caused by a change in state law, students are predicting administrators will be more hesitant to call calamity days.

“I think that we will have less days off because our school year is changing. Since we have had so many days off in the past years, I think students will be disappointed by the lack of snow days,” senior Sarah Tibbitts said.
