3 Students Killed, 2 Wounded in Chardon High School Shooting

Three students were killed and two others were wounded when a shooter opened fire on the school’s cafeteria at 7:45 a.m. this morning. One victim remained in critical condition as of 7:00 p.m.

Superintendent Joseph Bergant told CNN that an individual entered the high school Monday morning and began shooting in the cafeteria, wounding four boys and a girl. One student later died at the hospital.

Bergant told CNN that despite original reports that two shooters were involved, it appears that only one person is responsible for the shooting.

The shooter, believed by Bergant to be a student, is in custody of the Geauga County Sheriff’s office.

Students were evacuated from Chardon High School and escorted to nearby Maple Elementary School. Chardon High School has about 1,100 students and is approximately 29 miles northeast of Shaker Heights.

The shooting comes one month after a 16-year-old Shaker Heights High School student was arrested Jan. 25 for possessing a semi-automatic pistol at school. In a Feb. 2 email message to faculty and staff, Principal Michael Griffith described that weapon as unloaded and inoperable.

This story was updated Feb. 27 at 7:40 p.m. and again on Feb. 28 at 1:05 p.m.
